We are digging our graves with out teeth! Too much sugar!

June 6, 2019 By Amina Goodwin MD 1 Comment

Let’s talk about sugar!

How many teaspoons of sugar do you think you consume each day?

How many teaspoons SHOULD you consume?

Checking this one thing on food labels made me realize just how much sugar I was consuming.

When I share this with others, they are often shocked to know just how much sugar they are consuming too.

Only when you know better, you do better. If you don’t know, you just don’t know.

😊

Do you know the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends all persons, diabetic or not, have only 6 teaspoons added sugar per day?

Yep! They made those recommendations about 6 years ago.

More recently, I saw they gave a range of 5 to 10 teaspoons per day added sugar.

This means any sugar added to foods, whether it be to your tea/coffee, or sugar added to pastries, snacks, cereal etc. So they are not talking about sugar naturally occuring in fruits and milk.

They way to appreciate the sugar content, is to know that 1 teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4 grams of sugar.

Go to your pantry and take out a can of soup, or a box of cereal.

See how much sugar it says it contains.

For example…if it says 20 grams of sugar per serving, that equals 5 teaspoons of sugar (20 divided by 4).

NOTE…that is 5 teaspoons PER SERVING!

The next question is…how much is ONE serving?

One serving might be 2 cookies, or 1/2 cup of cereal, etc.

But…who measures exactly ONE serving?

Chances are, you are taking 3 or more servings in one go.

Therefore, multiple 5 teaspoons by 3, and that’s the amount of sugar you are having with that one food at that time.

Do this tomorrow…or maybe from tonight…now…

Start paying attention to the labels of everything you eat in one day.

Start adding up, or at least estimating the amount of sugar, from the labels of everything you eat.

Be sure to multiply, if necessary, if you are having more than one serving of the food.

If you are like I was, and are consuming 50 teaspoons or more of sugar per day, your body is under stress. EVEN if you are not (yet) diabetic.

And if you are already diabetic, then it will only be a matter of time, before all hell breaks loose in your body.

Start elliminating bit by bit, the added sugar in your diet, and you will DEFINITELY notice a difference.

I truly do not think I would be feeling as energic and youthful as I do now, if I did not slash my sugar intake 5-6 years ago.

Now, I am not going to say that I am down to only 6 teaspoons of added sugar EVERY single day.

That’s really tough to do.

But your body will thank you for any improvement yon can make, day by day, month by month, year by year.

The best time to make a positive change was yesterday. The next best time is today.

So…share if you may. How much sugar do you think you consumed today?

Go slash that sugar!

So are we digging our graves with our teeth? A leading Australian diabetes researchers would say in many cases we are and he is warning of a global diabetes epidemic with the capacity of bringing down health systems.
